Backed by Decades of Experience

About AREVA Inc., a member of the AREVA Group:

  • The leading supplier of nuclear energy products and services in the United States, through AREVA NC Inc. and AREVA NP Inc.

  • A key player in the electricity transmission and distribution sector, through AREVA T&D Inc.

  • A significant U.S. employer, with headquarters in Bethesda, Md., more than 40 U.S. locations, and more than 5,000 employees

About the AREVA Group:

AREVA is a world-renowned company offering customers reliable technological solutions for CO2 -free power generation and electricity transmission and distribution. AREVA is the world's leading supplier of nuclear energy technology and services, with expertise covering the entire nuclear fuel cycle: uranium mining, conversion and enrichment services, fuel fabrication and used fuel management.

About AREVA’s Expertise in Uranium Enrichment Services:

AREVA has operated Eurodif’s Georges Besse Plant, using gaseous diffusion technology to enrich uranium, since 1978.  The Georges Besse Plant has maintained an exemplary safety record since it began operations.

To replace the existing plant and to meet growing demand around the world, AREVA began construction on a new plant in 2006. This new plant, Georges Besse II, will feature centrifuge technology, which will require far less electricity than gaseous diffusion. The Georges Besse II Plant will comprise two enrichment units with a total production capacity of 7.5 million SWU, which can be extended if necessary to 11 million SWU. Careful consideration was given to both natural and man-made risks to ensure the plant’s safe operation.

About AREVA’s Planned U.S. Uranium Enrichment Plant

AREVA brings the same commitment and expertise to the American uranium enrichment facility, which will be similar to the Georges Besse II replacement plant.

Within the AREVA group, fuel cycle subsidiary AREVA NC Inc. is leading the U.S. uranium enrichment plant project with a dedicated organization.

The proposed American uranium enrichment facility will use centrifuge technology developed by the Enrichment Technology Company Limited (ETC).  ETC is a joint venture that is 50 percent-owned by AREVA. The nuclear community considers ETC technology to be the most efficient currently available. ETC's proven and safe technology has been employed successfully in Europe for more than 30 years.

To execute the work successfully, AREVA will leverage its plant design, nuclear engineering and environmental engineering expertise, as well as extensive NRC licensing experience.

AREVA Selected Bonneville County, Idaho, for its Uranium Enrichment Facility

AREVA Inc. announced on May 6, 2008, that it selected the state of Idaho for its new U.S. uranium enrichment facility. The site is located in Bonneville County, 18 miles west of Idaho Falls, close to the Idaho National Lab.

The selection was made after an extensive technical, environmental and socio-economical analysis of several potential sites throughout the United States. With its decision, AREVA will move forward to seek all necessary approvals from federal, state and local agencies, including a license from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to construct and operate the facility.

While AREVA had several attractive sites to choose from, it opted for Idaho Falls, which has strong ties to nuclear energy, and which welcomed its proposed enrichment facility to become a new member of its community. AREVA looks forward to a productive and long-term partnership that will deliver diversity and strength to the regional economy.

The new state-of-the-art facility represents a multi-billion dollar investment that would create hundreds of high-skilled jobs during the construction and operation phases.
