AREVA NC Inc.: Supporting the U.S. Department of Energy's Yucca Mountain Project

AREVA NC Inc., working under contract with Bechtel SAIC, LLC, is designing material-handling systems for the U.S. Department of Energy's Yucca Mountain Project, the site for the United States' first long-term geologic repository for used nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste. Bechtel SAIC is the management and operating contractor for the Yucca Mountain Project, which is located in Nevada.

For the project, AREVA NC Inc. heads up an integrated team comprising several other U.S. AREVA group companies, including AREVA NP Inc., Transnuclear, Inc., and Packaging Technology, Inc.

The AREVA NC Inc. team will provide operational design support for the repository's surface facility, where spent nuclear fuel and high-level nuclear waste will be received and prepared prior to placement in the Yucca Mountain Repository.

The design, based on 37 years of safe operational experience with used nuclear fuel, will comply with rigorous regulatory standards and contribute significantly to Bechtel SAIC's successful execution of the Yucca Mountain Project.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) first began studying Yucca Mountain as a possible site for the nation's first long-term repository in 1978, and in July 2002, President Bush signed House Joint Resolution 87 allowing the DOE to move forward with the project. The DOE is now preparing an application to be submitted to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a license authorizing construction of the repository.

Spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste resulting from nuclear power generation and U.S. defense programs are currently stored at 131 sites around the country.

Yucca Mountain is located in a remote desert on federally protected land within the Nevada Test Site boundaries in Nye County, Nevada. It is approximately 100 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada.
