Transnuclear WINS DOE HANFORD CAPSULE DRY STORAGE AWARD

Transnuclear, Inc. (TN) announced today that it has won a competitive procurement to design and supply a dry storage system for the Cesium and Strontium capsules at the DOE Hanford site. Under the contract, with Fluor Hanford, TN will utilize their NUHOMS® dry storage technology to store 1,936 CsCl and SrFl capsules currently in wet storage at Hanford's Waste Encapsulation and Storage Facility (WESF). Dry storage of the capsules, representing a significant fraction of the total waste curie-count at Hanford, is an interim, risk-reduction measure, prior to transport to Yucca Mountain or vitrification.

In announcing the award, Alan S. Hanson, President and CEO of Transnuclear, Inc. stated " We are very pleased to have this opportunity to implement our dry storage technology for the dry storage of the Cesium and Strontium capsules at WESF. The horizontal transfer method and superior shielding capabilities of the NUHOMS® system are an excellent match for the source term and facility interface constraints of this application." He noted that this is the second application of the NUHOMS® technology in the DOE complex, the first being the NUHOMS® 12T dry storage system, which houses the TMI-2 damaged core at INEEL.

TN's NUHOMS® system is the most widely used spent fuel dry storage technology in the US. As of today, there are over 230 NUHOMS® canisters loaded with over 6000 spent fuel assemblies at ISFSIs in the US. Transnuclear’s dry storage systems have been selected at 20 ISFSIs serving 32 reactors.

Transnuclear, Inc., with headquarters in Hawthorne, NY, and offices in Fremont CA, and Tacoma WA, is a wholly owned subsidiary of COGEMA and part of the AREVA group of companies, a world leading nuclear technology company. Transnuclear, which was incorporated in the United States in 1965, supplies engineering products and services for the transport and storage of radioactive materials.
