AREVA TEAM COMPLETES SEGMENTATION AND REMOVAL OF REACTOR VESSEL GTCC INTERNALS

Bethesda, MD., February 26, 2004 – AREVA’s subsidiary, Transnuclear, Inc. (TN), announced today the successful segmentation and removal of the Greater than Class C (GTCC) top guide interior grid structure from the Millstone Unit 1 Nuclear Power Station’s reactor vessel. The project was the result of a very effective cooperative team effort by Transnuclear, Inc., the project prime contractor, Dominion Nuclear Connecticut, Inc., owner of Millstone Unit 1, MOTA Corporation, Duratek Services, Inc., and SCIENTECH, Inc.

The Transnuclear team, in preparation for the segmentation of the GTCC, removed, packaged and disposed of the reactor’s irradiated control rod blades, control rod blade guides and irradiated in-reactor vessel instrumentation. The segmentation portion of the project included the design, fabrication, and deployment of several remotely operated and specialized mechanical segmentation tools that operated within the flooded reactor vessel. Control and accountability of GTCC cutting fines was maintained by designing and deploying an underwater collection system. Segmentation, removal and packaging efforts were accomplished on schedule and within budget.

GTCC segmentation and removal is part of a larger scope of decommissioning services being performed at the Millstone Unit 1 Nuclear Power Station. Other services include water processing; reactor cavity draining and coating; reactor vessel draining and closure; design, fabrication and installation of concrete shielding; spent fuel pool cleanup; final isolation of the reactor cavity from the spent fuel pool; tank cleanout and disposal of all related irradiated waste.

Transnuclear, Inc., with headquarters in Hawthorne, NY, and offices in Fremont, CA, and Tacoma, WA, is part of the AREVA group. Transnuclear, in addition to decommissioning support services, supplies engineering products and services for the transport and storage of radioactive materials.
