AREVA Subsidiary Announces New Appointments

Bethesda, Md., May 18, 2005 – AREVA subsidiary COGEMA, Inc. announced today the appointment of Dr. Alan Hanson as its Executive Vice President and Sam Shakir as Director of Strategy.
As Executive Vice President ofCOGEMA, Inc., Dr. Hanson will be responsible for AREVA’s U.S. business development in the areas of used fuel management, used fuel treatment initiatives, transportation, and related U.S. government programs.
Mr. Shakir, in his new capacity as Director of Strategy, will oversee U.S. strategy for COGEMA, Inc. in coordination with its U.S. subsidiaries. He will also participate in the review and development of AREVA strategic initiatives in all business areas.
With regard to both appointments, COGEMA, Inc. Both Dr. Hanson and Mr. Shakir will retain their current roles at AREVA subsidiary Transnuclear, Inc.: Dr. Hanson as President and Chief Executive and Mr. Shakir as Vice President Marketing and Business Development.

Biographical information:

Alan Hanson joined Transnuclear, Inc. in 1985 as Vice President for Engineering and Operations, and was elected President and CEO in 1987. Dr. Hanson began his career in 1975 with the Nuclear Services Division of Yankee Atomic Electric Company. In 1979, he joined the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna , Austria . At the IAEA, he served first as Coordinator of the International Spent Fuel Management Program and later as Policy Analyst with responsibilities for safeguards and non-proliferation policies. Alan Hanson received a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Stanford University and earned his Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is a member of the American Nuclear Society and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Sam Shakir joined Transnuclear, Inc. in 1997 and has served in a variety of roles with increasing responsibility, culminating in his current position. He launched his career in the nuclear energy sector in 1991, joining ABB with various responsibilities in plant modifications and system upgrades. In 1993, Shakir joined ABB’s office at the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant, where he was involved in one of the industry’s earlier deployments of on-site dry storage of used fuel. Shakir joined Vectra Technologies in 1995 with responsibility for the design, licensing, and delivery of dry storage casks to various U.S. utilities. Mr. Shakir received his bachelor’s degree in engineering from Concordia University in Montreal in 1987 and his MBA from the Haas School of Business at the University of California , Berkeley in 2003.
