Bethesda, Maryland, March 1, 2007 - AREVA Inc., announced today that its
subsidiary Transnuclear, Inc. was awarded a contract valued at $11 million by the Nebraska
Public Power District (NPPD). The contract is for an initial order of 8 casks for the interim dry
storage of used nuclear fuel.
Under the terms of the contract, Transnuclear will supply NUHOMS® 61BT canisters
and HSM-H horizontal storage modules for NPPD’s Cooper Nuclear Station. The NUHOMS
system will be loaded at Cooper in 2009.
Transnuclear, Inc. Chief Operating Officer, Tara Neider, said about the contract, “The
fact that this technology has evolved to meet industry requirements seems especially true for
Cooper, where NUHOMS® is a very close fit. The system’s configuration will avoid the need to
make major modifications to the reactor building, and its superior shielding will enable NPPD
total flexibility in placing the storage modules virtually anywhere on the property.”
NUHOMS® technology was launched in the mid 1980’s when the need for dry storage
first arose. Under Transnuclear’s leadership, the system has evolved with industry demand to
become the most widely used dry storage system in the world.
