AREVA Inc. announced today that the U.S. Department of
Energy (DOE) has awarded AREVA Federal Services (AFS) a multi-million dollar contract to
continue with the development and licensing of the Transportation, Aging and Disposal (TAD)
canister-based system. The TAD canister is the centerpiece of the Energy Department’s
strategy for packaging used nuclear fuel for transportation to and disposal in the proposed
repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada.
AFS, together with AREVA subsidiary Transnuclear Inc., will perform the final design, prepare
and file a license application to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, obtain NRC
certification, and demonstrate the TAD at a U.S. utility.
“AREVA is very pleased to have been selected to further this important DOE program for the
national waste repository project. We have a strong record of bringing innovative solutions to
DOE and will put that experience to work,” said Bill Gallo, President of AREVA Federal
Services.
“We are extremely happy that DOE has recognized the technical value of Transnuclear’s
storage and transportation experience and our company’s stature in the marketplace,” said
Tara Neider, Transnuclear President and CEO.
DOE estimates that approximately 90 percent of the used fuel sent to the Yucca Mountain
repository will use the TAD canisters. The TAD canisters are expected to be commercially
available as early as 2013. A preliminary TAD design has already been developed, based on
Transnuclear’s certified storage and transport systems, under an earlier AFS contract with
DOE. This contract will reinforce the strong presence of AREVA in the used nuclear fuel
management in the United States.
